William Fleming
A right arm fast medium bowler, Fleming has been one of
Australia's most reliable bowlers in recent times. Born on the
24th of April, this 30 year old Taurean charges like a bull at his
victims on the batting side. Although he might not have taken the
same number of wickets as his more illustrious bowlers like Warne
and McGrath, he is equally difficult to score off.
The most famous of his actions are his looping out swingers. They
are definitely
the most dreaded of balls to the batsmen. What's more, even the
world's best batsmen are bewildered by it. Fleming's Test debut
was in 1994/95 in the Australia vs. Pakistan at Rawalpindi, 2nd Test. His
first One day International was, infact a year before in 1993/94
where he played against South Africa at Perth at the World Series.
Fleming has 74 wickets to his credit and 149 maidens. Not too bad
with the bat too, he even has two fifties in his booty. Yet, what
sets him apart is his love for taking up challenges. The killer
instinct is there. We best remember that spirit in him in last
year's World Cup semi-final when he bowled that final over.
However, his Test career has been shortened somewhat and he now
features more in the One-Day game.
Another
feather in his cap is that he is only the third player in cricket
history to claim a hat trick on Test debut. This was as mentioned
before, against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Fleming is a vital player
of the Australian team. Not only is he a world-class bowler, but
also a capable outfielder and at times, a useful lower-order
batsman who likes to challenge the attack.
