London, July 30:
Batting legend
Sunil Gavaskar said India need to come out of the one-day
mind-set if they want to make a come back in the current series
after losing the first Test against England by 170 runs at
Lord's on Monday .
"More than anything it
was their mind-set that let the team down.
"That's (mind-set) what
they have to change and quickly if they want to retrieve ground
in the series", the little master said in his column in the
Daily Telegraph on Tuesday.
Analyzing India's
batting, he said batsmen were dismissed playing extravagant
shots that are so much a part of one-day cricket but have to be
played with a certain amount of care in the longer version of
the game.
"The disappointment is
that this batting line-up is an experienced one and has played
enough cricket to know that Test matches call for more
discipline in shot-making and shot selection. Yet the Indian
batsmen went about playing gaily as if they were 400 for two
when in fact they were chasing 487 in the first innings,"
Gavaskar said.
Though he criticized
almost all Indian batsmen, including Sachin Tendulkar, he
showered praise on Ajit Agarkar, who hit a maiden unbeaten
century in India's second innings.
"It was a well-compiled
effort for he played straight, didn't try to work the ball over
midwicket, which has got him into trouble in the past, and was
quick to punish the loose delivery. He must now look to make
more such contributions and not rest on his laurels".
