Kumble ruled out of rest of tour, flying home
St. John's
(Antigua), May 12:
Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble has been ruled out of the rest of the
India's West Indies tour due to a fractured jaw and will fly back home
on Monday.
"Kumble will
fly back to India tomorrow afternoon," Gautam Dasgupta, the Indian
team's manager, said on Sunday.
"We took him
to the hospital for x-rays this morning and it was found that the jaw
was severely fractured," he said.
Kumble had
been hit square on his jaw by a rising delivery from paceman Mervyn
Dillon during his knock of six on the second day of the fourth test
match on Saturday at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
Indian team's
physiotherapist Andrew Leipus said Kumble would have to undergo
surgery and was also ruled out for the five-match one-day series in
West Indies starting on May 25.
"It's not
great news," Indian team coach John Wright said. "We're hoping he'll
be fine soon."
Dasgupta said
the Indian team management had decided not to call for any replacement
for the last test in Jamaica starting on May 18.
Kumble,
India's most successful current bowler with 318 wickets in 69 tests,
was recalled for the fourth test after being left out of the last two
tests at Trinidad and Barbados.
The
31-year-old took all 10 Pakistani second innings wickets at New Delhi
in early 1999 to equal the world record of England's Jim Laker and set
up a memorable series-levelling win.
