India
sets a target of 108 runs for NZ in first ODI
Auckland, December
26: Javagal
Srinath snagged two quick wickets in an over, while Ashish Nehra
grabbed another as India stormed back into contention.
First,
Srinath struck with the first delivery of the over, getting Craig
McMillan to snick one through to the keeper for 4.
Then
with the last delivery of the over, the veteran Indian seamer
sent back Brendon McCullum in the same manner. McCullum made 4.
Ashish
Nehra in the next over trapped Lou Vincent in front of the stumps
for 13.
After
19 overs, New Zealand were strugglling on 53 for six. Kyle Mills
was unbeaten on 1 with Jacob Oram yet to score.
Earlier,
New Zealand bowler Jacob Oram grabbed a career-best 5-26 as injury-hit
India were skittled out for 108 in the opening one-day international
at Eden Park here on Thursday.
Oram
looked virtually unplayable on a portable pitch as India collapsed
to their lowest ever total against New Zealand, their previous
lowest in 61 one-dayers being 112 at Melbourne in 1980-81.
None
of the batsmen could cope with Oram's bounce as India were shot
out in the 33rd over.
The
24-year-old seamer triggered a dramatic collapse with a pair of
two-wicket overs as India slipped from 63-2 to 74-8.
Oram's
maiden five-wicket haul in 26 one-dayers also revived unhappy
memories for India, who had crashed to pace on seamer-friendly
tracks to lose the two-Test series 2-0.
There
was no respite from pace for India as Shane Bond, Daryl Tuffey
and Kyle Mills shared four wickets to keep pressure on the batsmen.
India's
top-scorer in a dismal batting performance was opener Shiv Das
(30), included in the one-day squad at the 11th hour following
injuries to three key players.
Rahul
Dravid (20), skipper Sourav Ganguly (14) and tail-ender Zaheer
Khan (14) were the other batsmen to reach double-figures.
Das
was scheduled to return home after the Test series, but was asked
Wednesday to stay back with the team.
Batting
superstar Sachin Tendulkar (ankle), all-rounder Sanjay Bangar
(knee) and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (hand) all were unfit for
the day-night game.
Das,
playing his first match of the tour, looked the best Indian batsman
on a lively track despite being bowled off a Bond no-ball early
in his innings.
He
played a couple of attacking shots as he struck two fours and
then a six off Tyffey in his 60-ball knock before being caught
by skipper Stephen Fleming at first slip off Mills.
India's
problems began the moment Ganguly lost the battle of toss to Fleming
for the third successive time, including two in the Tests.
Put
in to bat, India were jolted in the second over of the match when
Bond bowled Virender Sehwag for nought with an inswinging yorker.
Venkatsai
Laxman also did not stay long, pulling Tuffey straight to Mills
at deep square-leg after contributing nine.
Das
and Ganguly put on 35 for the third wicket before Oram struck.
Ganguly
lost his middle-stump as he inside-edged an Oram delivery and
Yuvraj Singh edged one to second slip where Nathan Astle took
a low catch in the same over.
Oram
then dismissed Mohammad Kaif and Anil Kumble in a space of four
balls and then removed Javagal Srinath in his next over to complete
a five-wicket haul.
