England
selectors asked to explain one-day flops
London,
June 22 :
England's cricket selectors have been called upon to explain their
team's dismal showing in the one-day triangular series with
Australia and Pakistan.
England
have now lost 11 consecutive one-day games and England and Wales
Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Tim Lamb said here on Friday the
team's performance needed improvement.
"It's
hugely disappointing for an England side to lose all six games. It's
not good enough and that's why we've called this meeting between the
ECB management and the selectors."
"I
think we're entitled to ask the selectors what their plans are
particularly in regard to international one-day cricket."
The
men who will have to face the questions are chairman of selectors
David Graveney, coach Duncan Fletcher, and former England
off-spinner Geoff Miller.
England
captain Nasser Hussain, who missed the tournament with a thumb
injury, will not be present as he is playing for Essex.
"This
is not a witch hunt," said Lamb. "We just want to see that
the selectors have robust plans in place for the World Cup in 2003.
"Selection
is matter for the selectors which is why we have asked them to come
in and talk to us. They are all contracted until the end of the 2003
season."
Lamb
admitted that injuries had weakened England's side and added that
the meeting was not a prelude to major changes in personnel.
"We have full confidence in Duncan Fletcher and the other
selectors."
