August 2, 2001: The national selectors, meeting in Mumbai on Thursday afternoon, picked the following players for the upcoming three-Test series against Sri Lanka:

Saurav Ganguly (captain), Rahul Dravid (vice captain), Shiv Sunder Das, Sadagopan 

Ramesh, Hemang Badani, Ajit Agarkar, Javagal Srinath, Harvinder Singh, Dinesh Mongia, Samir Dighe, Rahul Sanghvi, Mohammad Kaif, Sachin Tendulkar, Sairaj Bahutule, Zahir Khan, Venkatesh Prasad.

Sachin Tendulkar has been picked for the squad -- conditional on his getting a thumbs-up following a final bone scan on his injured foot, scheduled for August 10. If at that point Tendulkar is deemed still unfit, then Jacob Martin will replace him in the squad.

Ashish Nehra and VVS Laxman were both ruled out through injury.
