Waugh
wants own Aussie Ashes urn: report
London,
August 19: Steve Waugh is hoping to forge a new Ashes trophy
that he can take back to Australia at the end of next week's fifth
and final Test, it was reported here Monday.
Waugh
is in favour of burning the bails from the Oval showdown and placing
them in a new urn, the Daily Mail reported.
The
Australian skipper and his team-mates are reportedly frustrated by
the refusal of the MCC to allow the original Ashes urn to leave the
Lord's museum, where it has rested since 1927.
Now
Waugh supports the idea of a 'new' set of Ashes being taken back to
Australia.
"I
like it - that's a great idea. If somebody can find an appropriate
vessel to put the Ashes in, we'll do it," Waugh remarked when
the suggestion was put to him.
An
England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman said they would not stand
in the way of the demand.
"If
Steve wants some bails used at The Oval, we will happily supply
them," the Mail quoted him as saying.
A
plea by Waugh for Australia to be given the original trophy earlier
this month was rejected by the ECB.
"We've
won the series and I think we should get the Ashes," Waugh said
after Australia's seven-wicket victory at Trent Bridge in the third
Test. Australia lead the five-match series 3-0 and have set their
sights on a historic 5-0 whitewash.
