Tufnell recalled to England squad for fifth
Test
Leeds,
August 20:
England have recalled Middlesex left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell into
an expanded 14-man squad for the fifth and final Ashes Test at The
Oval starting on Thursday.
Also
called up was Leicestershire pace bowler Jimmy Ormond. Alan
Mullally, who played in England's fourth Test six-wicket victory
completed here at Headingley on Monday, is omitted because of a rib
injury.
There
have been repeated calls for Tufnell, the most successful English
spin bowler in county cricket this summer, to win another Test cap.
David Graveney, England's chairman of selectors, announcing the
squad here Monday said: "Phil Tufnell is an outstanding
left-arm spinner."
England
have also retained Glamorgan off-spinner Robert Croft in the squad
although Graveney said it was unlikely both slow bowlers would play
at The Oval.
Tufnell,
35, has played 41 Tests, the last of which was against South Africa
in Cape Town back in the 1999-2000 season. He has taken 120 Test
wickets at 36.55.
He
has also had Test success against Australia at The Oval in the past
- back in 1997 his match haul was an impressive 11 for for 93.
Australia
lead the current series 3-1.
England squad: Michael Atherton, Marcus Trescothick, Mark
Butcher, Nasser Hussain (capt), Mark Ramprakash, Usman Afzaal, Alec
Stewart (wkt), Alex Tudor, Andrew Caddick, Darren Gough, James
Ormond, Richard Johnson, Robert Croft, Phil Tufnell.
