Hussain confident of Headingley comeback
London,
August 9: Nasser Hussain
said Thursday he will be fit to resume the England captaincy in next
week's fourth Ashes Test at Headingley.
Hussain
has been out of first class cricket since breaking the little finger
of his left hand in the opening Test of the series against Australia
at Edgbaston at the start of July.
But
his return to full fitness continued Thursday, when resuming on 24
he went on to make an unbeaten half century for Essex in their
Second XI match against Nottinghamshire at Halstead.
"I've
had plenty of batting practise in the nets and I'm feeling in good
nick," said Hussain.
"Hopefully
if all goes to plan, I will be fit to resume the England captaincy
next week."
Hussain
produced some well-timed strokes, including a six before rain
intervened to leave him on 51 not out.
"That
innings has been of great benefit because it now means that I've had
nearly two-and-a-half hours of meaningful practise under match
conditions," he added.
"The
Notts boys bowled well and gave me a good and thorough examination.
"I
don't have any problems with the finger - it seems fine. It is a
little swollen which is what I expected, but I've been told to keep
icing it which will alleviate the situation.
"I
have taken the precaution of batting with some protection on the
outside of my batting glove, but overall there has been no adverse
reaction at all."
England
are 3-0 down in the five match Test series, Australia already
retaining the Ashes in Hussain's absence.
The
fourth Tests starts on Thursday August 16 with England expected to
name their squad on Sunday.
