Australia vs England-1894

In December 1894, England became the first team to win the Test match after being given a follow-on by Australia in Sydney. Australia won the toss and elected to bat. Australia made 586 in their first innings. In reply England were all out for 325 and were given a follow on by Australia. In their second innings England made a score of 437, thus taking a lead of 176 runs. But Australia chasing a winning score of 177 runs was all out for 166. Australia vs England-1981

In July 1981, History repeated it self  when for the second time England  won the Test match after being given a follow-on by Australia. This time again Australia won the toss and elected to bat. They made 401 runs in their first innings. Whereas England were all out for 174. They were asked to follow on and than made 359 runs thus taking a lead of 132 runs. Chasing a very moderate score of 133 runs to win Australia was all out for 111. England won the Test Match by 18 runs. 



  

  
  
Australia vs India-2001

15th March 2001, India became the third team in the history of world cricket to win the Test Match after a follow-on. This time again the loosing team was Australia. Aussies again won the toss and elected to bat. They made an impressive 445 runs in their first innings. India was all out for 171 in their first innings ad were asked to follow-on. In the second innings India made a massive 657 taking a lead of 384 runs. Match was already on its last day when India declared their 2nd innings and had just 75 overs to dismiss the mighty Ausssies for a win. India bowled out Australia on 212 runs and won the match by 171 runs.

   
Why was the Kolkata match special for India ?
  • India became the only team to halt Australians from their spree of continuous 16 wins after the World Cup of 1999.
  • VVS Laxman of India to make highest individual score of 281 runs against Australia surpassing Brian Lara's 277.
  • Harbhajan Singh became the only Indian bowler to have taken a hatrick in Test cricket.
  • VVS Laxman became the highest individual scorer for India by surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's record of 236 runs.
