A
100 in a 100 - the English story
Stewart
scores a century in his 100th Test.
A 196 for three on Friday, 4th August by England was
topped by Alec Stewart's unbeaten century in his 100th Test in
reply to West Indies's first innings 157. At a mere 17 for three,
things looked pretty bad for the English team. However, Stewart
and debutant Marcus Trescothick took it from there and managed to
break the pace bowlers dominance for the first time in the match
as they put on 179, an England record against west Indies.
Stewart made a 105, while Trescothick's brave 65 was also well
appreciated. Having done that, Stewart became the fourth batsman
to score a century in his 100th Test after England's Colin Cowdrey,
Javed Miandad of Pakistan, and Gordon Greenidge of West Indies. It
was the wicket keeping all-rounder's 14th Test century.
On the other hand, Courtney Walsh was remarkable in his delivery.
Walsh bemused the England top order with his deceptive pace and
trapped Thorpe leg before wicket with a cleverly disguised slower
ball. Even debutant Trescothick, who took 45 minutes and 25 balls
to score his first runs in Test cricket, stood helpless at the
other end as Walsh made a mockery of the England batting order.
Walsh infact took three wickets without conceding a run!
But most importantly the day also belonged to swing bowler Andrew
Caddick who quite easily removed Ridley Jacobs and Ambrose in a
nine-ball spell just before lunch. Stunning performances and
memorable records made the day a great day for cricket lovers.
