Graham Thorpe is a sound left hand bat, capable of scoring well
against good attacks. Thorpe has a short backlift, a compact defence, and an excellent
temperament. He made many runs for Surrey before being selected for England for the first
time in 1993, making a century on his debut. After a difficult series in the West Indies,
he regained his place against South Africa, and has since become, a fixture in the
team. Although very consistent, he has tended to have difficulty converting good scores
into centuries. Particularly strong square to the wicket, he is also a useful occasional
change bowler. A fine fielder, both at first slip and in the deep. A persistent back
injury has restricted his appearances in recent years, causing his withdrawal from the
1998-99 Ashes series. |
